Risky-Play Workshop

  • Out & About Forest and Nature School Inc. 503 Rafting Road Foresters Falls, ON, K0J 1V0 Canada (map)

At Out and About, we know that children grow when they’re trusted to take risks, test limits, and learn from their own experiences. This interactive workshop is designed to give parents both the confidence and the tools to support risky play at home and in everyday life.

What you’ll gain:

1. A clear understanding of risky play: what it is, why it matters, and how it looks in practice (from climbing trees to tool use).
2. Strategies for stepping back: how to observe, trust, and allow children to problem-solve without immediately rushing in.
3. Guidelines for stepping in: when safety boundaries require it, and how to intervene in ways that protect learning while keeping children safe.
4. Supportive language: phrases that validate effort, encourage self-reflection, and invite children to make safe, independent choices.
5. Confidence in the power of choice: how giving children real decisions builds self-awareness, responsibility, and resilience.
6. Hands-on skills: guided practice in outdoor activities such as safe wood whittling and fire-building, showing how risk and responsibility can go hand in hand.
7. Practical tools you can use right away: including a handout of key phrases, a risk-benefit framework, and example scenarios to guide your responses at home.

Why join?
This workshop helps bridge the gap between home and Out and About’s approach, so children feel supported consistently across environments. Parents will leave with new insights, a toolkit of strategies, and the confidence to empower their child’s growth.

Format:
🌱 Engaging discussions and parent reflections
🌱 Role-playing common outdoor scenarios
🌱 Hands-on activities outdoors
🌱 Closing circle to share insights and commitments

Cost: $70 per family. Families may also choose to have their child join Out and About for the morning program for an additional $20.

By stepping back at the right times and stepping in when needed, you’re giving your child the gift of confidence, resilience, and independence.
