Helping students grow and growing with them

Arija Bunkis

Director and Head Educator of Out and About Programs

Born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon, I spent my formative years immersed in the wonders of the outdoors. Exploring the forest behind my childhood home with my brothers and friends, I developed a fascination for rock collecting at an early age, often examining them under a microscope. Because why not? The winters were spent on the slopes of Mount Sima with my mother, cultivating a love for hiking and snowboarding that would shape my future.

At 15, my family and I moved to Ontario, where I discovered my passion for pedagogy through teaching as a snowboard instructor at Mount Pakenham. Working with children became my calling, leading me to spend four rewarding years at Camp Misquah, a non-profit summer camp for individuals with special needs. The profound impact of these experiences inspired me to support children and adults in one-on-one settings, utilizing the outdoors as a catalyst for development and connection.

After graduating from the University of Ottawa, my career in outdoor education continued at Algonquin College's Outdoor Adventure Program and Mount Pakenham as an instructor. I spent many summers on the river as a raft-guide, before moving to Fernie, BC, earning my Level 3 with CASI and becoming an Evaluator.

Returning to Ontario in 2018, I pursued further education in Early Childhood Education at Algonquin College, graduating with honors. Driven by a passion for the outdoors and a commitment to holistic child development, I became a certified Forest School Practitioner through the Child and Nature Alliance of Canada. Certifications in Wilderness First Aid, First Aid, and Swift Water Rescue. I am a continuous learner and dedicated to expand my understanding and awareness in creating programs that are inclusive to all.

Moving to Beachburg in 2019, I forged connections with the community and natural surroundings. Currently, Ilive in Petawawa, continuing my learning journey in outdoor education, child development, and psychology. My goal remains clear: to create space and time for all children and families to experience the wonders of the outdoors. I advocate for outdoor play over screen time, aiming to help children discover their potential, share in the marvel of the outdoors, and simply get out and play. In my belief, there's no better place for holistic development than in the embrace of nature.

I thank you all for being here.
