Program Overview
Our program offers dedicated time and space for children to grow in confidence, resilience, and their connection with the natural world. Designed for children ages 4–12, this unique experience combines outdoor play with hands-on learning, led by skilled educators and special guests.
Day 1: Introduction to Shelter & Safety
Understand purpose of shelters (weather, warmth, protection)
Learn site awareness (hazards, wind direction, ground conditions)
Build simple group shelters using natural materials
Day 2: Materials & Basic Structures
Identify and gather safe, suitable natural materials
Learn simple structures (lean-to, debris shelter basics)
Practice building small-scale shelters
Day 3: Strength & Stability
Explore structure strength (what makes a shelter stable)
Reinforce building techniques (layering, anchoring, support)
Improve and rebuild shelters with stronger designs
Day 4: Tarp Shelters & Adaptability
Introduce tarp use and simple setups (A-frame, lean-to)
Learn knot basics for securing shelters
Build shelters adapted to different “weather scenarios”
Day 5: Team Builds & Reflection
Work in groups to design and build a functional shelter
Test shelters (wind, light rain simulation, durability)
Reflect on process, teamwork, and shelter effectiveness
Program Highlights
Child-led exploration with learning introduced naturally through play and curiosity
Nature games, storytelling, projects, and daily challenges that reflect the day’s theme
Small group adventures with a high adult-to-child ratio (1:7)
Supportive mentoring to encourage self-sufficiency and deeper learning
Focus on emotional intelligence, compassion, and gratitude
Visits from expert guests who inspire, teach, and guide children in outdoor knowledge and skills

Refund policy
Out and About summer program weeks are nonrefundable. An exception is made when we are able to fill the canceled space, and registrants will only receive a refund for the program, not the admin work. Upon filling the space we'll send the partial refund. Filling spaces takes time and we're busy in the program so we appreciate as much time as possible.
This program is opted to be canceled if spots are not filled.
